My favourite photography locations in Malta as a photographer
As a photographer with a penchant for ancient wall textures, intricate details, vintage aesthetics, lush greenery, and vibrant colours, Malta is a dream come true. Since moving here in 2017, I have discovered a plethora of breathtaking spots that make my photography truly enjoyable. Here are my top ten favourite photography locations in Malta.
1. Valletta
Valletta, Malta's capital, offers an array of photogenic sites.
The Upper Barrakka Gardens, with its panoramic views of the Grand Harbour, and the Lower Barrakka Gardens, home to a beautiful neoclassical temple, provide stunning backdrops for portraits and serene shots alike.
The iconic Bridge Bar, set against a backdrop of unique red balconies and booths, offers views from the bridge down steep streets, perfect for capturing the essence of Valletta's vibrant charm.
The hills of St. Ursula Street offer a charming setting with their steep inclines and historic buildings, ideal for creating dynamic compositions.
One of Valletta’s hidden gems is the underground gardens of Musei Fidei. This secluded spot offers a tranquil escape with its lush greenery and artistic charm, making it a perfect place for intimate portraits.
For a unique perspective, you can take a traditional boat transfer from the Valletta ferry terminal to the Three Cities. This experience, costing just a couple of euros, allows you to capture stunning shots of Fort St. Angelo and the yachts in the harbour from the water, providing a picturesque contrast between the historical fortifications and the modern marina.
2. Għajn Tuffieħa
Għajn Tuffieħa (Maltese for 'Apple's Eye') is a paradise for photographers seeking natural beauty. The sandy beach and dramatic waves provide a stunning backdrop for beachside portraits, while the zigzagging trails on the hills offer striking compositions with their winding paths and panoramic views. 3. Birgu
Birgu, also known as Vittoriosa, is one of the historic Three Cities and a treasure trove of photography opportunities. The picturesque yacht marina is home to some of the most luxurious super yachts, creating a striking contrast against the backdrop of the ancient fortifications of Fort St. Angelo. The fort itself offers a rich tapestry of history and architecture, perfect for capturing both grand vistas and intimate details.
Strolling through the narrow streets of Birgu, you will find an array of Mediterranean plants, colourful Maltese doors, and traditional balconies. The views from Tal-Mixta Cave are breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of the bay that is perfect for wide-angle shots. The cave itself adds an element of mystery and intrigue, making it a must-visit spot for dramatic compositions.
The Xwejni and Xlendi salt pans in Gozo reflect the sunset in a magical way, creating stunning mirror-like surfaces that are perfect for capturing reflective and ethereal shots.

6. Villa Frere
Villa Frere is one of my favourite spots not just for its beauty but for its support of local heritage. This neoclassical garden, with its serene atmosphere and artistic backdrops, is perfect for tranquil, picturesque photos.
The entrance fee of €5, which supports the volunteers and restoration efforts, adds a meaningful purpose to each visit. The villa’s lush greenery, ornate structures, and peaceful ambiance make it an enchanting location for portrait photography.
The garden’s layout, with its winding paths, secluded corners, and panoramic views, provides endless opportunities for creative compositions. Each visit feels like a new adventure, with different aspects of the garden revealing themselves in varying light conditions. 7. Mdina
Mdina, known as the Silent City, is a true medieval gem. Its narrow, winding streets, ancient walls, and horse-drawn carriages create a perfect setting for historical and romantic photos. The bridge entrance to the city and the labyrinthine paths adorned with flowers make Mdina a photographer's delight, providing a sense of stepping back in time that is both captivating and unique.

9. Buskett
Buskett, translating to "forest" in Maltese, is one of the island's few wooded areas, making it a rare and precious spot for nature photography. The lush greenery and the proximity to Verdala Palace provide a refreshing change from the island's coastal scenery. It is a popular picnic area and perfect for capturing romantic couple photos amidst the tranquil natural surroundings.

The Exiles area in Sliema is a quieter, residential part that has preserved many of its historic villas and typical Maltese balconies and doors, painted in a rainbow of colours. It is a tranquil spot, ideal for capturing the charm of old Malta amidst a modern setting. The nearby seaside offers additional opportunities for beautiful coastal shots, making it a versatile location for all kinds of photography.
